Yummy Homemade Syrup and French Toast

Happy Monday!

Isn't it funny how some of the simplest things can be the easiest.

For example having Breakfast for Dinner, Oh how my kids just love pancakes, eggs and bacon. You would think that I had just painted the moon the way they carry on. If they could they would have it daily for dinner. (I did try to make it a once a week meal in my meal plan, but Mr.F and myself are not as keen to having such a rich sweet meal so many times a month. In addition to the big breakfast, Mr.F likes to make every other Sunday that which includes country fried potatoes, eggs, and his specialty beer brats.) OH YUMMY.

Well not so very long ago, last week I came across a fantastic deal on Texas toast. (extra thick sliced bread)
Less than a dollar a loaf, I know right, a fantastic deal so I picked up multiple loafs. And that night we made  French Toast and bacon for dinner.

BUT  we ran into a small problem, we were out of syrup. I know what your going to say "How can you have French Toast without syrup?" Well we didn't, I reached back into my memory banks and remembered the simple syrup that my mother used to make and whipped up a large batch before dinner.

Step 1: Place 4C. sugar and 2C. water in pan and heat on medium to a slow boil.

Step 2: Watch very closely so the syrup doesn't boil over the sides of your pan. Remove from heat if it looks like possibility.

Step 3: I pull out a small amount to cool  to check for thickness.

Step 4: Once I have the consistency I want I remove from heat, let cool slightly then add 1&1/2 tsp. maple flavoring or Vanilla depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Step 5: Place my container (old syrup bottles from store) in ice water and slowly pour warm liquid thru funnel into the bottle.
or bottles. And walla you have the best tasting syrup for your French toast, Pancakes or what ever you would like use it for.

Now for those of you that would like to make French toast or may have never had the opportunity to try French Toast, this is how we grew up making it.

First gather your supplies; eggs, milk, bread (any type) vanilla, cinnamon, and a pie plate or bowl.

The amounts that I am using is to feed a family of six with leftovers (unless the boys get to them).
Mix together 8 eggs,1 tsp. vanilla,1 or 2 T. milk, a dash of cinnamon (depends on how well you like it)

Beat until well mixed.

Dip your bread into the mixture.
Place on preheated grill and cook first side to a golden brown flip and brown and there you go
French Toast.
Now sprinkle with powdered sugar, a dab of butter and smothering of syrup in any order you wish.
